A home built on Community
Wilfrid East London Co-op was created to provide stable, community-focused housing for residents who need more than just a place to live. We believe housing should offer dignity, consistency, and a strong sense of belonging.
We place strong importance on resident input and actively encourage participation in decision-making processes. Residents are supported to have a meaningful and ongoing voice in how the cooperative is run — helping to shape activities, strengthen the community, and future-proof the co-op for years to come.

Common questions
A few quick answers about how Wilfrid East Coop supports residents and members.
Who is Wilfrid East London Coop for?
We welcome people who want to be part of a member-led community, where involvement, participation, and engagement are at the heart of everything we do. Residents are encouraged to play an active role, contribute ideas, and feel connected as part of a wider, supportive community
What makes cooperative housing different?
Cooperative housing is different from traditional renting because residents are actively involved in how their homes are managed.
Unlike private renting or most social housing, residents in a co‑operative are members as well as tenants. This means they have an equal say in decisions about how the housing is run, including policies, maintenance, and community activities. England.sh…ter.org.uk
Co‑operative housing is typically not-for-profit, with rents set to cover the cost of running the homes rather than to generate profit. This helps to keep housing more affordable over time. england.sh…ter.org.uk
Residents also share responsibility for the day-to-day running of the co‑operative, which can create a stronger sense of community, stability, and mutual support. [uk.coop]
In short, cooperative housing offers a more community-led, affordable, and participative way of living, where residents have greater control over their homes.
Do residents have a voice?
We place strong importance on resident input and actively encourage participation in decision-making processes. Residents are supported to have a meaningful and ongoing voice in how the cooperative is run, helping to future proof the coop, activities, and the overall direction of the community.
Can I ask about housing availability?
Yes. We welcome enquiries about housing; however, availability within our cooperative is limited. As we provide secure tenancies, properties do not become available frequently and our housing stock can fluctuate. Unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that you will be offered a property.
If you apply and are successful in the interview you will be placed on our waiting list. Waiting times can vary significantly depending on availability and demand, ranging from approximately one month to up to five years.
If you would like to join the waiting list or require further information, please get in touch with us.
How do I learn about membership?
Visit the Membership page for more information about joining and participating.
What kind of support does the coop provide?
The cooperative has a dedicated Office Manager who works closely with the Management Committee to ensure the smooth running of the organisation.
We also offer a Rent Support Surgery, providing residents with a private and confidential space to receive advice and support with any rent-related queries or concerns.
